I use a Hailea-009E air compressor to supply all the air I require in the fishroom for filters, air stones, bbs hatching etc. This is a reasonably large compressor at 140 litres/min air production, and I wanted something with enough pressure to supply air to 3 feet of water depth in my storage butts. Now at 112 watts it uses quite a lot of electricity as it runs 24/7, so in a year it uses 981 kWh of power. Now recently I thought that my old compressor was making more noise than usual, so I purchased a new one for £66 delivered, which was quieter but only by 5dB (as shown by an app I downloaded onto my mobile phone). The new compressor was at 54-55dB whereas the old one was at 60dB, but had a fluctuating noise level that I found quite annoying. Hopefully I can overhaul the old compressor and it will be my standby in case of future problems. I actually took a reading of my fishroom, without the compressor running (no air bubbles or filtration) and it was 24-25dB.
Now I wondered if I could make it even quieter, so I purchased a couple of silencers (mufflers) on Ebay for the intake and though they helped slightly it was only by 2-3dB (51-52dB cf 54-55dB). From the picture below you can see the silencer on the air inlet. My next though is to place the compressor inside a box, packed with sound absorbing foam. Though before I try this I want to upgrade my air distribution system (another story) so it will not be that quick.

Have just added to my topic on culturing Grindal Worms, to say that recently I had problems using ordinary garden compost that I had left over from my autumn planting. The worms did not do well and actually disappeared over a week or so. Now back to using coir and the cultures are doing well, once again.
